Rough Riders Get Sidetracked By South East

Riders Look For Bounce-Back Win vs. South Gate

(Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles, CA) October 14, 2021 [Special Note From The Editor’s Desk]: We apologize for the tardiness of our October 1st “Game of the Week” that featured the Roosevelt Rough Riders vs the South East Jaguars in an Eastern League match-up.

(Game Recap): It was Youth Night, Showing School Spirit Night, and the start of the month-long “Pink Night/Month for Breast Cancer Awareness” as the Rough Riders came into this Eastern League match-up feeling very good about their (5-1) season overall – (2-0) in League, and their chances of finishing in a 2, or perhaps a 3-way team fight for the title.

South East Head Coach, Ramon Altamirano and his Jaguars put together a great game plan and did what teams have to do when thy are struggling in their season’s “Win-Loss” record. They scored on their multi-facted drives, when not interrupted by major penalties, and they capitalized quickly on the Riders’ turnovers at critical times and locations on the field.

(Roosevelt Scoring Highlights): The Riders put up their first TD late in the opening period at the 00:07 mark when #10 Carlos Velazquez, Special Teams, returned the kick-off 75 yards. It was followed by Nasir Reed’s successful 2 point conversion making the Riders (8) South East (7). In the 3rd quarter, James Cortez, scored on a 1 yard QB sneak & Julian Quezada added the 2 point conversion. However, South East led by a score of (29-16) with 2:40 left  in the half. In the Riders 4th quarter, Wingback/Eddie German punched it in from 3 yards out and Quezada picked up another 2 point conversion moving the score to (35-24) Jaguars. That would be the closest the Riders got on the scoreboard. Roosevelt’s final score came at the (1:08) mark left in the game when Johan Alfaro ran it in untouched from 8 yards out. The 2 point conversion was missed, giving the Riders a total of (30) compared to the Jaguars total of (50). That turned out to be the final score, South East 50, Roosevelt (30).

(South East Highlights): QB/#2/Malachi Betters and his RBs, #1/Carlos Reyes and #8/Johan Castillo, piled up lots of rushing yardage while his WRs, #5/Erik Gonzalez and #14/Ernesto Guerrero made big catches deep inside Rough Rider territory. Special teams was the deciding factor in their win due to instinctiveness during on-side kick-offs and regular kick-off returns as evidenced by #10/Zaire Jones who returned the final Riders kick-off, some 90 yards for their final score. The Jaguar’s air and running games complimented each other in timely manners on many drives during the game. Coach Altamirano’s Jaguars could be big trouble for other teams as we reach the final phase of the regular season. Keep your eye on #2/QB/Malachi Betters, a tremendously gifted student-athlete who plays both ways and presents himself as a durable team player with excellent sportsmanship qualities.

In coaching circles, teams win and lose, and lessons are always learned whatever the outcome of any game. And thus, it was a difficult game to lose at this point in the season. Per Head Coach, Aldo Parral’s assessment, he noted that…“we did not play very well tonight. We turned the ball over too many times, made some key mental mistakes, and the major penalties severely hurt us in establishing any decent offensive rhythm.”

Coach Parral also had this to say about his game evaluation,…”true, we had to go without the services of our leading running back and linebacker, Jared Andrade, and several more of my injured players, but we just couldn’t overcome the odds that we found ourselves up against. We’ll have to fix things quickly during our upcoming “BYE” week and get back on the track we’ve been on for most of the season when we play South Gate.”

And lastly, with their much-appreciated “Bye” week, Coach predicted that Andrade will be healthy again and that should right the ship to its best attacking position. The Riders BYE week was this past Friday, 10/8. When they return to Eastern League play, they will travel to play the South Gate Rams on 10/15.
